What does a cam chain do?
It takes some power from the crankshaft and transfers it to the camshafts which open and close the valves at the correct time. There is some slack in any chain drive system so the bearings can turn freely without excessive preload. Excess slack in a timing chain would change the valve opening and closing timing. The tensioner (hydraulic piston for the Aprilia) is designed to remove the excess slack in the timing chain. If a timing chain (or belt) were to break, the valves no longer open or close, and the pistons will crash into the valves and do great damage the engine.
